In Barbados, an integral component of the OSH system is the National\nAdvisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (NACOSH) which facilitates\nsocial dialogue on occupational safety and health issues in Barbados.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NACOSH was established in 1983 in accordance with the\nprovisions of the Factories Act, 1982. The Terms of Reference defining NACOSH\u2019s\nmandate are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. To make recommendations on matters referred to it by\nthe Minister, submitted to it by interested parties or pursued by the Committee\nby its own initiative.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. To advise the Minister on programmes in the field of\noccupational safety, health and hygiene.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. To advise the Minister on policies and procedures in\nstandard setting and in the development and review of regulations and\nguidelines to be used by the Government.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. To review and make recommendations to the Minister on\nthe introduction of new processes or substances in the workplace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. To review and make recommendations with regard to the\nsafety, health and welfare arrangements for specific occupational groups and in\nareas where there are no formal health and safety programmes; or where such\nprogrammes are judged to be inadequate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. To facilitate the creation of public education and\nsensitisation programmes on matters of health, safety, welfare and wellness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. To liaise with other relevant agencies and assist with\nthe coordination of activities pertaining to occupational health and safety, in\norder to prevent duplication of efforts and ensuring the best utilisation of\nresources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. To provide a forum to identify and discuss major\nissues impacting safety, health and hygiene at the national level and to\nformulate ideas to oversee such.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. To conduct an annual self-assessment of its\nperformance versus its mandate and share that assessment with the Minister of\nLabour; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  10. to be the link\nbetween the Ministry of Labour and stakeholders who will provide information on\nan on-going basis on the state of the safety and health in their respective\ndepartments and industries through their representatives.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
